Hospital Queue and Patient Flow Management for Kenya
See where every patient is, how long they have waited and which service point is backing up, live, without anyone walking the corridors.
What’s included
- Live board of every patient in the facility by stage: registration, triage, consultation, lab, pharmacy, billing
- Department queues so each service point sees only its own patients
- Triage priority so the sickest patient is not waiting behind routine reviews
- Emergency bypass that moves a critical patient straight to care
- Real-time updates across every screen, with no refresh button
- Cancelled visits recorded with a reason, so the queue stays honest
Long waits in Kenyan outpatient departments are rarely caused by too few clinicians. They are caused by patients who are lost between stages: sent to the lab and forgotten, waiting at the pharmacy for a prescription that has not been released, or sitting in the wrong queue for forty minutes.
A queue system that issues numbers does not fix that. Knowing where every patient is does.
One board, every stage
AfyaConnect's patient flow board shows every patient in the facility and the stage they are at: registration, triage, consultation, laboratory, pharmacy, billing. It is driven by the record itself. A patient moves to the next stage when the work at the current one is recorded, so the board cannot drift from reality the way a separate ticketing system does.
Each service point sees its own department queue. Reception sees who is waiting to be registered, the lab sees who has an order outstanding, the pharmacy sees who has a prescription to fill.
Priority that reflects acuity
Triage sets priority, so the sickest patient is not behind eleven routine reviews. A genuine emergency can bypass the queue entirely, and the bypass is recorded.
Real time, not refresh
Updates are pushed to every open screen as they happen. Two clerks working the same queue see the same thing. A board on the wall of the nurses' station is current without anyone touching it.
Finding the bottleneck
Every stage change is timestamped. After a week the facility can see where patients actually wait and at what times of day, which is usually not where everyone assumed. That is the evidence for moving a clinician, opening a second pharmacy window or changing when the lab batches its samples.
Part of the system, not beside it
The flow board is not a separate product bolted onto your records. It is a view of the same encounters, orders and prescriptions that the hospital management system already holds. Pair it with appointment scheduling to flatten the morning peak. Register your facility to see it on your own patients.
Frequently asked questions
- Is this a ticket-number system?
- No. It is a workflow board driven by the clinical record. When the lab finishes a test, the patient moves to the next stage because the result was recorded, not because someone pressed a button on a separate queue system. That is why it stays accurate.
- How live is "live"?
- Changes appear on every open screen within moments, pushed from the server rather than polled. If a network blocks the live connection, the board falls back to refreshing every few minutes so it is never silently stale.
- Can an emergency skip the queue?
- Yes. An emergency bypass moves a critical patient straight to care and records that it happened, so the board stays an accurate account of the day.
- Will it tell us where our bottleneck is?
- Yes. Because every stage change is recorded, the board shows which service point patients are piling up at, and the history shows the times of day it happens. Most facilities discover that the bottleneck is not where they assumed.
